A Message from Youth Services of Oklahoma County

*Disclosure to my readers: I am a member of the Community Advisory Board for SKIL (Supporting Kids in Independent Living), a program of Youth Services.

What would you do with $10,000?

We’ve been asking ourselves that question quite often over the last few days, and let me tell you why. We were excited to learn that Youth Services for Oklahoma County has been named as a finalist for a $10,000 grant from the Cox Connects Foundation. That means we are one of 20 local nonprofits participating in Cox’s online voting contest to receive the $10,000 grant. How would we spend that $10,000? Our answers might surprise you. We could use the $10,000 to provide shelter and care to more 15-year-old kids like Kate. A victim of abuse, neglect and abandonment, Kate was often left to live on her own for days and weeks at a time. She has been homeless and in foster care. Kate considers our Family Junction Youth Shelter her home and our staff her family. How many more teens like Kate could we help with that grant? We could use the $10,000 to buy winter coats and groceries for young people like Shawn. Shawn’s parents are both drug addicts, yet he is a straight-A student, senior class officer and member of the student council. Shawn plans to attend college and wants to be an engineer. Just think how many more high schoolers like Shawn we could help if we were to win this award. I could tell you countless stories of the good we’ve done and the good we can still do. Now you can help us do good with just a few clicks on your computer keyboard. The rules for the Cox Connects Foundation contest are really quite simple – the nonprofit that earns the most votes takes home $10,000. Voting begins today and will continue through Sunday, Dec. 11. You can vote for Youth Services for Oklahoma County each day of the contest. Even better, you can vote for us each day in multiple ways. You can vote at the Cox Connects website, on Facebook and in person at any Cox Solutions store location. That’s right, you can vote three times each and every day! In addition to voting daily, please ask your friends, family, business associates and even the guy at the hardware store to help us win the prize. Forward this email to your contacts and post about us on Facebook; anything to send more votes our way so we can buy coats for kids like Shawn and provide Kate and others like her a safe place to stay.
